Gospel ‘Cool Kid’ Mmatema Moremi
Meet multi- gifted Mmatema Moremi who has taken the South African entertainment by storm. She was trusted into the main spotlight and won many hearts over when she was a contestant on the music TV show South African Idols in 2015. Mmatema’s is also known for her bubbly ,confident and fierce personality off stage but also for faith in the Lord.
Since her Idols days we have heard more and more from this gifted young lady. She has had the opportunity to be a TV presenter, Actress and even released her very own Live recorded album. The 2015 Idols season 11 top two contestant says her secret to all the success has always been prayer. “I’ve been blessed with the gift of versatility and I do not limit myself to one genre ” she said speaking in an radio interview on Metro FM.
Mmatema Music
Mmatema is one persistent and driven lady, she entered the Idols competitions and failed many times before her big breakthrough. She entered the SA Idols competition for the first time in 2013 and then again in 2014 but she was unsuccessful in her attempts but her dream never died in her. She new she had the gift of music and her time will come if she does not give in. Mmatema had won other music competitions before and was also a member of the award winning Tshwane Gospel Choir before trying out for Idols. The Tshwane Gospel Choir gave her an opportunity to travel as far as Scotland to perform at the Fringe festival in Edinburg.
She recorded her debut album Love.Praise.Worship live on the March 3rd at Atterbury Theatre in Pretoria, The album comprises 16 tracks. Some of the songs include ‘Iโm Sorry’ , Oh I love You (which expresses love) and popular single from her album Ke Lerato. The songs are about God and general life challenges more like a “It’s a spiritual soul” album,it is an album that caters for everyone.
Where she’s From:
Mmatema Moremi was born in 1992 at Moletlane a village just outside Sebetiela in Limpopo. Mmatema came to the Gauteng Province soon after finishing her grade 12 and that is where she was able to grow her love for music and the arts.ย ย In Gauteng she enrolledย at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and later graduated in 2013 for a degree in Linguistics. She started singing from the age of 10 and the church choir help her to grow her gift.ย
She was turning 26 year old this year in February and sinceย February is dubbed the month of love she celebrated her birthday with her fans by hosting a show to share the love. When asked about her faith and spirituality she is not shy to say she is a believer, a born again Christian and nothing will separate her from that as it always comes out in the projects she does.ย
Mmatema TV Presenter
Mmatema bagged a TV show on one of the biggest South African TV channel SABC 1. The new gospel show on SABC 1 Sunday evenings is called Gospel Unplugged. This is however not her first presenting gig besides being a program director at church she been doing a show on DSTV’s One Gospel every New Year’s Eve. Mmatema explained that her short stint on One Gospelโs New Yearโs Eve show was just the platform she needed to prepare her as she’s was selected as the host of Gospel Unplugged. The show was nominated and won an award as the Best Gospel Show at the 11th SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards 2018.
Mmatema the Actress
Mmatema also added acting to her list of achievements, she got the opportunity to be the leading lady in a stage musical. A Tribute to the Manhattan Brothers at Soweto Theatre in 2016. After losing out on Idols SA glory a couple of years ago to Karabo Mogane, she steps- up to take the bull by its horn as an actress. Moremi was announced as one of the leading faces of the SABC 2 drama Bone of My Bones. She plays Thembi, a school teacher married to Karabo Mohlala, played by the award winning Aubrey Pooe. The Show is set for its second season on SABC 2 and her character has caught the audiences attention.
