Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule Honored with Provincial Government Send off
Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule, a well-known radio broadcaster and a significant figure in the gospel music industry, passed away on Monday after a short illness.
She was widely respected and loved for her contributions to South Africa’s music scene, particularly in gospel music.
Zanele’s Funeral Services Held at Durban ICC like the Crowns
Zanele’s funeral was held on Saturday, August 17, at packed Durban’s Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre(ICC). It was a send off fit for a queen organized by Icebo Lethu group in true Zanele style.
Ukhozi FM’s Siya Mhlongo and MEC Mbali Shinga directed the programme of the star studded funeral. Artists Rebecca Malope, Bishop Benjamin Dube, Dumi Mkokstad, Pastor Gumbi, Pastor Tshepo Mngoma and many more graced her final sent off.
She was laid to rest at Mariannhill cemetery in Pinetown. The Ukhozi FM broadcaster and founder of the Crown Gospel Awards succumbed to lung cancer at the age of 52, passing away at Parklands Hospital in Durban where she was born.
Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule, was honored with a Special Provincial Official Funeral Category 2. Premier Ntuli reflected on the profound impact of Zanele, likening her to the biblical figures Deborah and Esther.
“MaMbokazi was a beacon of hope, a leader who guided us through difficult times, and a fierce protector of our youth. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations.”
Zanele’s Memorial Services Held in KZN and Gauteng
On Thursday, family and friends gathered to celebrate Zanele’s life, remembering her impactful legacy. Fondly referred to as “Mazetzet” by her fans and loved ones, she was honored at a memorial service for her significant contributions to gospel music.
Most eyes were on ‘Sibongile & The Dlaminis’ actress Khwezi Myeza, she and her siblings bid farewell to their mother, Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule with a moving speech. Mbokazi-Nkambule’s death struck a nerve, especially when her grandchildren broke down on stage.
“We were raised by a powerhouse. Our mother loved us dearly, and she raised us to know God,” said Yolanda.
Zanele Mbokazi’s husband, Bishop Mpendulo Nkambule, offered an emotional closing in Durban remembering the love of his life. He thanked all who supported his family during this challenging time, acknowledging family, friends, and Zanele’s fans.
Declining Health and Diagnosis for Zanele Came as a Shock
Zanele’s health began to deteriorate earlier in 2024. Concern arose among her dedicated listeners when she missed hosting her popular Eshilo show on Ukhozi FM on April 21.
Shortly afterward, she was admitted to the hospital after work. This where her husband announced her lung cancer diagnosis on Ukhozi FM radio show.
While her supports were shocked by the news there were also false prophecies declaring her illness as witchcraft at the Ukhozi FM station. During this difficult time, Zanele responded rebutting false claims. The Assemblies of God church community hosted special prayer sessions for her recovery in Gauteng and in KZN at the God Never Fails auditorium that included all inter-faith gospel ministers.
A Life of Many Talents – Zanele Mbokazi
Born on November 7, 1971, in Durban, Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule was a multifaceted individual.
She was not only a radio broadcaster but also a preacher, evangelist, entrepreneur, and producer. She was dedicated to her role at Ukhozi FM on Sundays & spent her last working days serving in ministry . She is best known for founding the Crown Gospel Awards, which recognizes excellence in the gospel music industry.
Educational Background and Legacy
Zanele was highly educated, holding a BA in English and Politics and a BA Honours in Media and Communications from the University of Natal. She also earned a diploma in Public Relations from Damelin.
Throughout her career, she made significant contributions to the media industry, hosting the television show Gospel Gold and dedicating her final working days to Ukhozi FM.
Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule’s influence on South African gospel music and radio broadcasting will be remembered for years to come.
