Sipho Makhabane is celebrated as one of South Africa’s most influential gospel artists and producers. He first rose to fame in the mid-90s with memorable hits like Ngitinikela Kuwe and Yek’intokozo, which touched the hearts of listeners everywhere. Over the years, he continued to inspire through powerful albums such as Calvary and Ebenezer.

After retiring in 2010, Sipho dedicated his time to nurturing new gospel talent, guiding the next generation of artists. The SAMAs are proud to recognize not only his musical contributions but also his commitment to uplifting others through mentorship and encouragement.

Over 30 Years of Gospel Excellence

Known affectionately as “Big Fish,” Sipho has been a pillar in gospel music for over three decades. He was introduced to the music industry by Dan Nkosi, debuting in 1992 with the album Thum’ Umlilo.

His 1996 release, Yek’Intokozo, catapulted him to fame across Africa and led to a tour in the United States. Since then, he has produced 38 albums, including collaborations with popular artists like Hlengiwe Mhlaba and Jabu Ngcobo.

A Return to Recording

Although he officially retired in 2009, demand from fans in countries like Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia, and Eswatini brought him back to recording. To this day, he continues to perform and release music, earning numerous awards in South Africa and Eswatini.

Discovering and Supporting New Talent

Sipho has played a crucial role in discovering and supporting new gospel artists, such as Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Thobekile Mkhwanazi, Pastor Ncanda, and many more. In 2016, he launched a talent search in Mpumalanga, which led to the creation of a gospel choir called Mpumalanga Praise. He also established a top-tier recording and mastering studio in Nkomazi, Mpumalanga, creating employment opportunities for young locals.
